Hair Loss Treatment

There are many reasons for hair loss. It may occur because of aging, change in hormones, prolonged illness, family history of baldness, high fever, diabetes , thyroid disorders and lupus. Intakes of protein and iron in your diet in smaller quantity, chemicals used for bleaching, dying, straightening or hairstyling that pull your hair tight are also the reasons of hair loss on the scalp. Vigorous brushing of hair is also another reason of hair loss. It is a wrong idea that brushing hair for several times a day will stimulate hair growth. It is a myth that wearing helmets or hats may lead to hair loss. In fact the root of the hair is alive and it gets oxygen from the blood of the scalp.

Prevention of hair loss

Too much exposure to the sun and pollution can make your hair dry, brittle and faded. This happens because of oxidation of the sulfur molecules within the hair shaft. That is why it is necessary to shampoo your hair at least three times a week. Select a shampoo carefully that suits your hair type. Shampoo removes dirt, so it must be worked through your hair, scalp and the hairline. The residual detergents used in shampoo can damage the hair shaft and scalp so it is advisable to rinse the shampoo thoroughly. Recurrent use of shampoo can make your hair dry, so experts recommend of using a conditioner that contains light proteins will strengthen your hair. You should eat foods that are rich in proteins and vitamins B, C, E, A and K along with nourishing your hair from outside.

Hair loss treatment
: Many types of hair loss treatments are available today. Before going for any sort of treatment some questions might disturb you like how much do hair loss treatments cost?

You must get an answer to all these questions before you can decide how to treat your hair loss problem. Some of the treatments are discussed here to help you find out which type of hair loss treatment you might want and which to avoid.

Before choosing any treatment to deal with your hair loss problem, first you should decide which approach to take - conventional or natural?

Natural or herbal hair loss treatment

Most men go in for natural hair loss treatment as other common hair loss treatments have serious side effects. The most common ingredient is green tea, saw palmetto, stinging nettle, pygeum africanum and ginko biloba. Ginko biloba is known to improve the blood circulation of the brain and the skin, which helps in providing more nutrients to the hair follicle thus promoting hair re growth. Green tea and pygeum have proved very effective in treating and preventing male pattern baldness. Saw palmetto encourages hair re-growth . Stinging nettle is generally taken in the form of pill and capsule. It is known to block the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone.

Natural or herbal hair loss treatments involve dietary, nutritional supplements and many other self-help techniques. But you have to be very careful as many so called "cures" out there are not that effective.

Conventional treatments include:

  • Medicines- These can be applied either topically or orally.
  • Hair transplants.
  • Steroid injections.
  • Laser therapy.

Hair loss treatment through medication

Dihydrotestosterone or DHT is identified as the key factor in male pattern baldness. Propecia is approved by FDA for treating male pattern baldness. Propecia decreases the concentration of DHT in the scalp. It produces more effective result when Propecia and Minoxidil are taken together in a combined routine

Minoxidil and Tricomin stimulates regrowth and scalp conditioning. Both the products use specific copper peptides to stimulate inactive follicles naturally into their growth phase. Minoxidil or Rogaine should be applied by fingers to the balding area twice a day. If the dosage is decreased to once a day, it will result in some hair loss, so just keep that in mind.

Hair transplants

Hair Transplantation is the process of simply removing hair from the thick areas and transplanting them in to the thinning bald areas. It is the technique of just rearranging the hairs that you presently have. The end result of hair transplants produces a natural looking growing head of hair. It is the only proven method to replace your lost hair, with your own existing natural growing hair.

Hair transplants involve a minor surgery to the scalp, which makes it extremely expensive. Therefore, choosing to undergo hair transplants is probably the last option for many. If done correctly, Hair transplants will give you a permanent solution and can produce results that look so real, that it becomes difficult for even a hair stylist to detect them. However, even in hair transplants you might feel unsatisfied as the final outcome might still not meet your expectations - especially considering their cost!

Steroid injections

Alopecia areata is a common cause of hair loss. Any body at any age can face this problem. It usually forms small, coin-sized, round patches of baldness on the scalp. Sometimes, it can involve the whole scalp (alopecia totalis) or even all the body and scalp (alopecia universalis). It is not possible to guess how much hair will be lost. Re-growth of hair takes place in typical alopecia areata is usually over a period of months or, sometimes, years, but cannot be guaranteed. The treatments that are available for this problem are steroid injections, steroid creams, steroid tablets and dithranol cream. Practically, it is not possible to treat the whole scalp with injections. While patients with long standing patchy alopecia areata have benefited from corticosteroid injections, patients with extensive alopecia areata did not report much success.

Laser Therapy

The treatment of laser therapy stimulates hair re growth, it cleanses and restores the scalp and its micro-circulatory system. This technology proved safe and effective for men and women experiencing hair loss, thinning hair or bad scalp conditions. The treatment method use focused light energy to stimulate the body's own ability to heal itself. Laser therapy treatment is based on the established scientific principle that light has an effect on cell function. It has the ability to destroy and heal. It reduces dandruff and other associated scalp problems.

In laser therapy a certain amount of dose (energy) has to be given to the patient to achieve an effect. Results show that more than 90% of users have benefited positively. You may notice significant improvement in your hair . Laser hair loss treatment is intended for them who have just begun to lose hair.

Conventional treatments or products are promoted as having been clinically tested. This means that such treatments will produce results but at the same time do not guarantee that those results will be permanent or even completely satisfactory for you. Moreover, these high-tech treatments will certainly cost much more than natural or herbal treatment. You have to evaluate the advantages of using a natural substance that has few side effects (or none at all) with the disadvantage of maybe taking much longer to have an effect (if any).

Most hair loss treatments usually have to be continued for an indefinite period of time. Conventional treatments therefore cost much more than natural treatments. Lastly, you should not forget that what works for others might not necessarily work for you too. Natural remedies have an advantage over conventional medicines and treatments, as long as they work.
